Amid a pandemic that impacted the entire building industry with material and labour shortages, Geelong-based custom builder Derbyshire managed to flourish through the challenge, winning a string of HIA awards to add to its belt as the family-run business continues to move with the changing tides after more than 30 years in the industry.

The pandemic posed one of the most challenging times for the building industry, with restricted supplies and disrupted trades buckling the entire system. While many builders faltered under the pressure of rising costs, others managed to navigate a way through.
Custom home builders Derbyshire not only survived but thrived during the tumultuous time, taking home multiple HIA awards in 2021 in the midst of it all.

“We saw the entire building industry severely affected during the pandemic. But with our focus on putting the customer first and working with our established network of trades built over more than 30 years, we managed to surpass some major problems others faced,” says Derbyshire Managing Director, Peter Derbyshire.

Beach Vista, a custom-build home set among the Bellarine Peninsula with sprawling ocean views, won four HIA awards in 2021, most notably the HIA Home of the Year award for the region, and then went on to win the overall Victorian HIA Custom Built Home in the $1.5 to $2m category. This adds to Derbyshire’s long list of HIA and Master Builders awards taken out during the past 30 years.

Design and build experts
Building a bespoke dream home starts with well-thought-out conceptual design that’s mindful of the expected costs. The Derbyshire team takes clients through considered decision-making during the design process to ensure value is added where it’s needed most without overstepping the budget.

Whether going for a pre-designed home or a design-and-build bespoke option, the Derbyshire process ensures a unique design that stays within client expectations.

“When combining live-price updates with good design, the outcomes for clients rarely miss the mark in terms of hitting their budget and design needs. We help clients make good decisions about where to spend their money, whether it’s an architecturally designed home or custom designed in-house. Our experienced team of designers and estimators make it simple,” says Peter.

Derbyshire is heavily invested in taking the client through a thoughtful process, from initial concept sketches and detailed drawings right through to handing over the keys and fitting in the best interior design. “It’s important to kick things off with a great floorplan that flows and connects the interior and outdoor spaces,” says Peter.

“The detail comes later but with a great floorplan and form, our projects always get off to the best start which leads to great outcomes. The journey needs to be well laid out – we want to make it enjoyable and not overwhelming.”

Quality interiors and finishes
Good design needs to be capped off with quality finishes, which comes down to using top-grade available materials while working
in collaboration with the best tradespeople and designers.

“Our network of experienced trades is key to achieving the highest standard of quality and finishes. Ensuring the high attention to detail is maintained throughout the entire process, from conception to final touches, is imperative,” says Peter.

Interior designers know the importance of fitting a layout with innovative and stylish interiors that make a house a home, while still being functional and liveable. Whether it’s a coastal home like the Beach Vista or a Hamptons-style like the Mahala, the finishing touches of any custom-built home makes the most of the internal space while reflecting the build and lifestyle of its owners.
The journey of a design-and-build project requires considered decision-making from conception through to handing over the keys, which is where Derbyshire stands out.

Beach Vista
With natural timber and matt black finishes throughout, the custom-built Beach Vista abode is left with no stone unturned. The stunning coastal oasis boasts lavish views of unending ocean sprawl set amid a tranquil natural backdrop.

Taking in the best of its landscape with large front windows soaking in undisturbed views across the bay, the home opens to sleek oversized natural timber floorboards and an open tread American oak staircase leading upstairs.

Light-filled rooms and floor-to-wall feature tiled bathrooms with a generous-sized bath and matt black fittings leave no attention to detail missing for a relaxed and uncompromised lifestyle. Caesarstone benchtops add an understated contemporary feel ideal for the coastal setting.

The heavy timber door is a strong statement, opening to a generous deck with an in-ground pool ideal for making the most of outdoor entertaining and warm summer evenings.

For cosy nights in, the large theatre room and contemporary gas log fireplace are where you’ll want to be with a red wine. There’s also the lift helping make this the forever home – and helping with taking the groceries upstairs in the meantime.
